For this piece, I knew I wanted to use inspiration from a trip to Washington when I explored an area that is special to my dad’s side of my family. On the same trip, I was helping my parents clean out some drawers and found a tablecloth that had a just-started embroidery pattern on it. My mother had started it back before she was married to my father and I wanted to replicate the pattern in the border on this piece. Not only did the pattern echo the setting sun behind the mountain, but also reflected my maiden name of “Day”. In a piece about where we come from, that felt fitting.
This artwork was made with individual pieces of embroidery floss that were glued to the background surface one by one and pushed into place with tiny scissors and a toothpick.
