The Sunken Garden that is part of the Como Zoo Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota is a gem. It is quite the experience to go from the deep cold of January and step into a tropically warm conservatory full of plants and trees from all parts of the world. The clear blue sky that is typical of the chilliest days fills this enormous glass room as a beautiful backdrop for the flower displays and charming artistic details like statues, colorful stonework, intricate railings, and star lights dangling from the ceiling. Trying to capture this using only thread was a challenge, but I am happy that all the elements that make this place special are able to shine.
This artwork was made with 97 colors of embroidery floss. Individual pieces were glued to the background surface one by one and pushed into place with tiny scissors and an X-acto knife.
