Edvard Munch’s image “The Scream” from 1893 is iconic. He actually created multiple versions of this, two in paint and two in pastel. I took on the challenge of translating the broad, expressive pastel strokes with individual strings. With this study, I had to figure out how to portray variations in each specific mark. With one swipe of pastel, it may start off solid and then get more faint and show other color or the blank paper underneath. Meticulously interpreting these moments in string without losing the raw emotion of the original was difficult.
This artwork was made with 51 colors of embroidery floss. Individual pieces were glued to the background surface one by one and pushed into place with tiny scissors and an X-acto knife.
